SCHOOL HISTORY The San Nicolas Elementary School is a multigrade pilot school in the District of General Luna which is about 7 km. away from the town proper. The school was established in the year 1956. It was then located at Sitio Maulawin in the house owned by Teodoro Yulde and the school started with only one permanent teacher teaching grade I pupils. It was the time of Felipe Pintano as Teniente del Barrio. The school then moved to another location which was also a part of Yulde’s land and thru bayanihan movement of the community they built classroom made up bamboo and weaved coconut leaves as walls and anahaw leaves as roof. The school then was a primary school offering classes from grades I – IV under the mentorship of Mrs. Gensaya of Lopez, Quezon and Mr. Amboy Abellila. The site has no clear donation and only verbal agreement was made between the Teodoro Yulde and the school. In the year 1960, Leandro Merle promised to the community that if he wins in the barangay election he will donate 1(one) hectare of land as new school site. On that same year, the school located in Sitio Maulawin was transferred to its new site in Sitio Central in the land owned by Leandro Merle. The PTA built a school building made up bamboo, coconut leaves and anahaw and it was formally named as San Nicolas Elementary School. Unfortunately the school building made from local materials were severely damaged by typhoon. Until after the government gave aid for the construction of new concrete school building. One of the classrooms was name Gusaling Merle in honor of the school site donor but after many years it was dilapidated and replace by another school building. One of the teachers during that time was Mr. Hilario. During those time there was no road to pass through and pupils walked between planted coconut trees to reach the school. In the year 1975, when Berning Mercado agreed to donate the right of way, that’s the time the school became along the barangay road. Simultaneously When the Teniente del Barrio Leandro Merle terminated his term and later on died, Tomas Merle the son of Leandro Merle promised to continue his father’s verbal donation of the school site. In the later years, he ordered the PTCA to compress the fence of the school and he was able to withdraw nearly one-fourth of the previous verbally donated land leaving just 2 742.75 sq. meters from the original 1 hectare. It was Tomas Merle and wife Cleotilde Merle, after 22 years, formalized the donation on October, 1982, through a notarized deed of donation to the Municipal Government exclusively for school purposes with Tax declaration No. 255. Mr. Fernando Dueñas was the school head during that time. The school progressed during the succeeding years up to the present, having 3 buildings, 3 teachers and 3 academic classrooms catering 107 pupils at present. It was the first school in General Luna District that raised fund for the purchase of computer and also the first school that launched computer literacy program for elementary grade level on year 2004. There are numbers of TV sets, DVD players, karaoke and newly acquired sound system used for teaching purposes and school activities. It was purchased under the leadership of Mr. Eutiquio A. Empleo as school principal, Mr. Manolo H. Mercado as PTA President. At present, school year 2010 – 2011, San Nicolas Elementary School is aiming to be a competent school in the coming years guided with school motto: LUX SIT (Let There Be Light).
